wendelah1: Fox Mulder reading (reading is fundamental)
[personal profile] wendelah1
I don’t have much to say about this episode that hasn’t been said before. I like it despite the fact that the plot literally hangs on the necklace around Scully’s neck, a necklace which, need I add, will never be seen again.

Problem number one: Would any man, let alone Fox Mulder, reach toward a woman’s breast and pick up her necklace in that creepy fashion? But the writer is forced to call the viewer’s attention to it because Mulder spotting the necklace amid Tooms' trophy pile is the key to his realization that Scully is in danger, allowing him to rush to her rescue. Problem number two: Unlike Tooms' other victims, Scully is an FBI agent. She has a gun in her hand. She could just shoot Tooms, eliminating the need for Mulder to rescue her in the first place. Problem number three: How the heck did Tooms get the damned necklace off Scully's neck without her noticing?

Enough with the nit-picking.

Alchemy (1757 words) by tree
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The X-Files
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Characters: Fox Mulder, Dana Scully

Summary:

Alchemy (noun) figurative: a process by which paradoxical results are achieved or incompatible elements combined with no obvious rational explanation.

This is my favorite post-ep for "Squeeze." She’s never made a secret of the fact that Scully is her favorite, but [personal profile] tree writes Fox Mulder as well as anyone in the fandom. She always looks deeper into the characters, too. Whereas in "Beginning," Jess M writes funny masturbation fic, drawing on Scully's obvious physical attraction to Mulder, [personal profile] tree shows us the isolation and vulnerability behind Mulder's smart ass persona. Right from the start, he is drawn to Scully, but what makes the fic so memorable is seeing his ambivalence toward her. PERFECT FIC IS PERFECT. Go read it.

In "Conduit," Mulder and Scully investigate their case, argue about their theories, investigate and argue some more, setting a pattern of interaction which will continue all during their partnership. She spends the entire episode trying to figure out a way to get through to him. She never does.

Mulder and Scully in the woods

ML wrote eight nine fics in her XF: Friday Nights series. They are all episode tags, they are all centered around a secondary character (or characters) on the series. They are well-crafted fics that fit perfectly into the interstices of The X-Files universe. I wish she'd written one for every episode. [livejournal.com profile] zinnia03, are you listening?

EDIT: I guess she is, because she just posted another one: Two-Faced, an episode-tag for "Space." I should run over and add it to the "Space" entry, too.

Impertinent Questions (1287 words) by ML
Rating: Teen
Warnings: none
Characters: Danny Bernstein, Dana Scully, Holtzman-and-Saunders, NSA Agents, Fox Mulder
Synopsis: ...you ask an impertinent question and you're on your way to a pertinent answer. Or not.
Author's notes: This is the fourth story in an exploration of the early seasons. They are loosely tied together but can be read as standalones as well.

Though a season six story, "How to Fake an Orgasm" is tagged as "Jersey Devil Redux." I like the way V. Salmone portrays Mulder and Scully as normal people, who go out on dates and try to have a social life. Setting this story during a time when the X-Files has been taken away from shut them makes perfect sense. While X-Files Mulder would not be playing hooky, Shit Detail Mulder, who hates doing those background checks almost as much as he hates working for Kersh, seems like a good candidate for a two-hour-lunch and some serial dating.

Mulder, Scully, and the other woman.

Written as V. Salmone.

The story is full of delightful Mulder/Scully banter, with many classic moments, like this one when Scully catches Mulder playing computer games.

Scully reached a hand around and pulled Mulder's monitor to face her. The wrong Tetris shape slid down the screen to balance inappropriately on a growing center tower. "Well, thank god you're taking care of the Tetris portion of our assignment," Scully said, spinning the monitor back toward Mulder. "I was really hoping you'd take it off my hands."

Another thing I like about this story is that Mulder doesn't get all of the funny lines.

This was very carefully written and yet it doesn't feel over-written or forced. Okay, I love this fic so I can go on and on about it, but the bottom line is that unless you're allergic to Mulder/Other leading to MSR, you'll enjoy this romantic comedy.

I don't know why I didn't rec this episode tag in the original post. Maybe I hadn't read it? It's excellent, with believable dialogue and spot-on characterizations.

Birthday Stories by Syntax6
Email: syn_tax6@yahoo.com
Rating: Teen (my rating, not hers)
Warnings: none
Characters: Fox Mulder, Dana Scully
Summary: Take a tour down birthday lane, seasons 1 through 7.

"Birthday Stories" is only related to "Shadows" because the first story starts right after the end of the episode, at Liberty Bell Center. Syntax6 is best known for her long novel-length case files and for writing believable Mulder/Scully romance. These short stories do not fit precisely into either of those categories. They follow canon, from seasons one through seven, with each pair of stories describing either Mulder's or Scully's birthday. Since this is not a show full of happy endings, some are quite melancholy. Please don't let that stop you from reading them. They are perfect gems that show us glimpses of the characters' lives off screen. They're full of intimate knowledge and convincing details about the cases Mulder and Scully are working on together and, of course, the characters themselves. Syntax6 wrote "Birthday Stories" as a birthday gift for a friend, but it is truly a gift to us all.

You can only read this fic at her website: Fanfiction by Syntax6.
